It works in Photoshop, just as well in the free GIMP \u2013 and, since 2025, with AI image generators if you know a few rules. Schokologo needs exactly this black-and-white drawing to emboss a design in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schokologo.com\/en\/logo-chocolate\">logo chocolate<\/a>: black becomes raised, white stays the surface of the bar. For three-dimensional figures read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schokologo.com\/en\/schokologos-world\/3d-chocolate-now-reality\">3D chocolate \u2013 now a reality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Why do we need a line drawing?<\/h2>\n<p>To make our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schokologo.com\/en\/logo-chocolate\">logo chocolate<\/a> we need a digital black-and-white line drawing as the master.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Black areas end up raised on the chocolate.<\/li>\n<li>White areas form the surface of the bar.<\/li>\n<li>The optimal line width is at least 0.3 mm \u2013 thinner lines fill in during casting.<\/li>\n<li>This does not apply to 3D figures: there we need 3D data (STL), see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schokologo.com\/en\/logo-chocolate\/product-replica\">3D chocolate and product replicas<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Can photos of people or buildings be used?<\/h2>\n<p>We are often asked whether photos of people, buildings or other objects can be reproduced. The answer: partly, yes. A photo-realistic print is not possible in embossing. We can, however, turn the outlines of people, buildings or objects into a relief that makes the design unmistakable on the chocolate. If you want colour or a real photo on the chocolate, you need printing rather than a line drawing: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schokologo.com\/en\/logo-chocolate#bedrucken-oder-praegen\">Printing or embossing?<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>What you need<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>a high-contrast photo \u2013 the subject free against a calm background<\/li>\n<li>Photoshop or GIMP (free, <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.gimp.org\/3.0\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">docs.gimp.org<\/a>) \u2013 or an AI image generator, see below<\/li>\n<li>ten minutes<\/li>\n<li>the result as a black-and-white file, ideally vectorised (ai, eps, svg), minimum line width 0.3 mm at final size<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Step by step in Photoshop<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Open the photo:<\/strong> open the photo in Adobe Photoshop or a similar image editor.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Convert to greyscale:<\/strong> Image \u2192 Mode \u2192 Grayscale.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Find edges:<\/strong> Filter \u2192 Stylize \u2192 Find Edges.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Adjust the contrast:<\/strong> Image \u2192 Adjustments \u2192 Levels \u2013 strengthen the important contours and drop the unimportant lines. Fine-tuning the black and white points gives better results.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strengthen the lines:<\/strong> thin lines get thicker with a Gaussian Blur (radius 1\u20132 px) followed by another Levels adjustment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Repeat:<\/strong> repeat the last two steps until the drawing looks right.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Video tutorials (in German): <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/E6N5jYJaDgg?si=mU0Mh5JhZ5ESTBli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">photo to vector graphic<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/0Hd375jU-fQ?si=t3B9xlAt5NfRvEIJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pencil effect<\/a> on YouTube.<\/p>\n<h2>Free in GIMP<\/h2>\n<p>The same steps exist in the free GIMP (version 3, 2026):<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Image \u2192 Mode \u2192 Grayscale<\/li>\n<li>Filters \u2192 <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.gimp.org\/3.0\/en\/gimp-filter-edge.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edge-Detect<\/a> \u2192 Edge (Sobel or Laplace)<\/li>\n<li>Colors \u2192 Levels: move the black and white points until only the contours remain<\/li>\n<li>Filters \u2192 Blur \u2192 Gaussian Blur (radius 1\u20132 px), then Levels again<\/li>\n<li>Colors \u2192 Invert if the lines come out white on black<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Using AI for the line drawing: tips and tricks<\/h2>\n<p>AI image generators (ChatGPT, Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, Ideogram and others) turn a photo or a description into a line drawing in seconds. They do not replace the vector step, though: <strong>AI produces pixel images, not clean vectors<\/strong> \u2013 an SVG \u201cexported\u201d by an AI is usually unusable. The route that works:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ask for black and white, no greys:<\/strong> prompt for \u201cpure black-and-white line art, no greyscale, no hatching, no gradients, no shadows\u201d. Grey cannot be embossed \u2013 it becomes either raised or surface.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thick lines or solid black areas on a white background:<\/strong> fine hairlines and dot patterns get lost in the chocolate. Ask for \u201cbold outlines, closed black shapes, white background\u201d \u2013 that keeps every line above 0.3 mm.<\/li>\n<li><strong>High resolution:<\/strong> generate the image at the highest available resolution or upscale it (at least 2,000 pixels on the long side). Only then can it be traced cleanly into vectors.<\/li>\n<li><strong>An aspect ratio that fits the chocolate:<\/strong> generate the design in the format of the target shape \u2013 square (1:1) for round and square coins, about 2:1 for the rectangular bar, portrait for heart and key. A design cropped afterwards loses detail.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vectorise only then:<\/strong> convert the finished pixel image in Adobe Illustrator (Image Trace, preset \u201cBlack and White Logo\u201d), in the free Inkscape (Path \u2192 Trace Bitmap) or with vectorizer.ai into SVG\/EPS and save it as a vector file.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check at final size:<\/strong> scale the drawing to the size of the chocolate and check that every line and every gap is at least 0.3 mm; simplify details that are too fine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Example prompt:<\/strong> \u201cConvert this photo into pure black-and-white line art: bold black outlines and closed black shapes on a white background, no greyscale, no hatching, no shadows, no text, square format, high resolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More free routes: photopea.com works like Photoshop in the browser, vectorizer.ai vectorises directly.
